Maryland Eastern Shore turned to a familiar face to launch the women's golf program naming Jamila Johnson as its inaugural women’s golf head coach.

Johnson is no stranger to The Shore as she coached the men’s golf team for two seasons (2010-12) while becoming the first female head coach in school history. In 2010, she relaunched the program with all freshmen.

In her second season, the team of all sophomores and freshmen improved nearly 12 strokes per round from last year. The squad saw Michael Veverka, Gregory Raad, Kijontray McClay, Christopher Toney and Sedrick Bailey all improve their average round score. In addition, the team was honored by the NCAA for academic excellence, placing in the top-10 percent of all men's gold teams in Academic Progress Rate, finishing with a perfect 1000 score. The team earned the highest cumulative GPA of all men's teams at Maryland Eastern Shore in the 2011-12 season.

Johnson, who was first named head coach in 2009, led a team of all freshmen for the relaunch of the program, the first season since 1961. Going against teams with stronger experience, the Hawks saw success in their first season. By the end of the year, the Hawks as a team improved 131 strokes from their first to their last three-day tournament and 38 strokes in two-day competition. Three student-athletes, Raad, Paul Cecil and Veverka, averaged 82.1 strokes or fewer their first season.
