HACKENSACK, N.J. - The women's bowling program at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is without question one of the best at their craft in the nation. They are also one of the best in the classroom. The National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) announced this week that the Hawks were one of 18 teams to earn All-Scholars Team distinction from the organization.

To be considered for team recognition, programs must have a cumulative team GPA of 3.2 for the 2011-12 academic year. The NTCA verified 18 teams meant that milestone. This is a new award created by the NTCA in addition to their All-Scholars Team released earlier this summer recognizing individuals.

Teams honored along with UMES included Adelphi University, Alabama A&M University, Cheyney University, Delaware State University, Elmhurst College, Long Island University, Monmouth University, New Jersey City University, Sacred Heart University, Saint Francis University (PA.), Salem International University, Sam Houston State University, St. Francis College (N.Y.), Stephen F. Austin State University, The University of Central Missouri and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Fairleigh Dickinson University had the highest team GPA with a 3.75 and was named the winner of the inaugural NTCA All-Scholars Team Award.

At the annual UMES Awards Banquet the women's bowling team was named the Female Team of Scholars Award winner, given to the team with the highest GPA among their peers. This is a distinction they have held every year at UMES starting in the 2000-2001 season when it was first presented.

The team will start the defense of their back-to-back NCAA Championships in November.
