INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore friends, fans and alumni supported one of their own this week as they gave recent graduate Megan Buja (Rockford, Ill.) enough votes to make the top 10 finalists for the NCAA's Favorite Elite 89 winner.

The school's media relations and public relations offices teamed up to solicit help from the campus community, students, friends and fans while also garnering help from other Historically Black Colleges or Universities and the college bowling community.

"As a University and as Athletic Department, we really appreciate the support shown for Megan in this contest," said G. Stan Bradley, Associate Director of Athletics. "Everyone has rallied around Megan to support her and I know she appreciates it as well."

Last week, voting was open on all Elite 89 winners from the NCAA's 89 Championships sports. Buja, who won the award in her sport three consecutive years (2012-2014), finished fourth in the voting with 826 votes to make the semi-final round that includes the top 30 vote getters. She then advanced as a top ten finalist to make the championship round. Voting opened today, July 16 at 10:00 a.m., online at ncaa.org.

Buja is the only winner from a historically black college or university (HBCU), the only woman from a DI school to make the finals and obviously the only bowling student-athlete. She graduated this past May with a perfect 4.0 GPA.

NCAA.org explains the award as "the Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's 89 championships."

Voting is open until Thursday, July 16 at 8:00 p.m. ET. You can vote once per day per email address. "Keep voting," said Bradley. "We can't have enough votes!"
