April 17, 2013
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – There was a mixture of action around the University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletics department last week as seven teams were involved in play. The bowling team highlighted action with a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships, while the baseball team went 1-3 and the track teams ran at the George Mason Spring Invitational. The softball team lost a pair of games to Delaware State and the tennis teams were swept in three contests. The golf team rounded out action with a sixth-place finish at the MEAC Showcase in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The baseball team went 1-3 last week.
UMES began with a 7-4 loss to Towson on Tuesday. Down five runs after six, UMES put together a three-run seventh inning to come close to Towson. Junior Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) finished a home run away from hitting for the cycle, as he went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Freshman Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) also was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
The team would then go on to win 1-of-3 against Norfolk State in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play. After being shut out 5-0 in game one, the UMES bats came alive in the second contest for an 8-6 victory to split the Saturday doubleheader with Norfolk State and snap a 14-game losing streak.
Sophomore Devin Repine (Salisbury, Md.) earned his first victory of the season, pitching the final two innings without a run. Sophomore Dustin Aigner (Melfa, Va.) was the only Hawk to hit safely in each game, combining to go 3-for-6 with two runs. With four hits in the final game, Escanilla went 4-for-8 with two runs, a stolen base and a pair of RBI. Junior Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) matched his personal-best record from last season, reaching base in both games to reach base in 34-consecutive contests.

UMES opened up in 5th place after the women went 1-3 in four games on Thursday. UMES opened with a 1005-983 loss to upstart Wisconsin-Whitewater and then dropped a 1045-1019 decision to Nebraska. The Hawks led into the ninth frame of the contest but as Nebraska surged, UMES left open frames.
UMES then took on the eighth-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson Knights. UMES had the lead heading into the tenth, but were unable to strike in the final game of the last frame. In the fourth match it was within a few pins the entire time but the Hawks surged ahead at the end and got the 977-948 win over Arkansas State.
The Lady Hawks would then go onto lose their first match against Nebraska, 4-1, on Friday, before posting a big win over Farleigh Dickinson later in the day. UMES defeated FDU, 4-2. The team would bow out of the championships in the next contest as they fell to Vanderbilt, 4-3, to claim third-place.
Freshman Kristie Lopez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) was named to the NCAA Championships All-Tournament team after she bowled in all seven team games for the Hawks. She started in six and averaged an impressive 203.3. She rolled the second highest individual game of the event, a 266 and tallied 1,220 pins on the day.
For her efforts, Lopez was selected as a PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week for the week of April 15.
