UMES poses with the sectional award from 2013.

Feb. 23, 2014

ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) earned their first official post-season berth earlier this week when the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) announced the qualifying assignments for the 2014 XBowling Intercollegiate Team Championships (ITC).

The Hawks will travel to Allentown, Pa. March 15-16 and bowl at AMF Parkway Lanes. Other locations include Fort Worth, Texas, Addison, Ill. and Smyrna, Tenn.

The top four teams from each region will advance to the finals of the 2014XBowling ITCs, held April 16-18 in Reno, Nev. at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

Other teams bowling in the Allentown regional include: Bowling Green, Briarcliffe, Davenport, Erie CC, Hudson Valley CC, Kutztown, Lawrence Tech, Norfolk State, Ohio State, Sacred Heart, Schenectady CC, St. Francis-Pennsylvania, Ursuline, Webber International and Wright State. This field includes five other NCAA schools.

Other NCAA schools in sectionals include: Stephen F. Austin in Fort Worth, Texas, Elmhurst and McKendree in Addison, Ill and Alma and Adrian in the Smryna Tenn. sectional.

Ten NCAA schools earned the USBC sectional berth. Eight NCAA schools made the championship field last season.

Two seasons ago UMES bowled in Allentown and took second to Webber International after leading the entire event until the final block. Last season, before winning the ITC National Championship, the Hawks went to sectionals in Las Vegas and took second to Wichita State. They last won a sectional in 2011 in Euless, Texas and went on to win the National Championship that year as well. They also won the Chattanooga sectional in 2010. They last won the Allentown sectional in 2009.

Sectional assignments are based on the Team Ranking System points earned in USBC Collegiate-certified competition throughout the season. USBC Collegiate attempts to place no more than two of the top eight schools and no more than four of the top 16 schools in a sectional based on final TRS totals. Sectional qualifier fields are determined by taking geographic distance, economics and field size into consideration.

The sectionals will consist of 32 Baker games each day for a total of 64 Baker games. The top four teams based on total pinfall in each division following the completion of competition at each sectional will advance to the 2014 XBowling Intercollegiate Team Championships.

In addition, these four locations will host qualifying for the 2014 XBowling Intercollegiate Singles Championships on March 14. Competitors at each of the four sectional events will bowl six games with 24 men and 16 women - the top four men and top four women at each sectional plus eight additional selections from the men's field based on size of field at each location - advancing to the national singles tournament on April 15 in Reno.
