UMES looks for a sixth tournament title this weekend.

Feb. 1, 2013

ARLINGTON, Texas - Coming off a tournament win at Kutztown last year, UMES opened in Texas with a seventh place standings. They quickly got it together to finish day two in fourth and the final day second overall. Today they hope to start even better, continuing their streak of first place days. So far the Hawks have finished 11 of their 12 days of competition in first place and won five of the six events they have bowled in.

"We have been bowling well," said head coach Kristina Frahm. "It's important we keep it going."

Also important is the chance of the Hawks to see some out of area competition. Both Nebraska and Arkansas State will be there, two teams in the top-ten in the polls that UMES has not seen this season.

"We are excited to bowl against teams outside of the east region," said Frahm. "It's nice to know how we match-up." The field features 12 teams, including Vanderbilt, Valparaiso, Nebraska, host Prairie View A&M, Bethune-Cookman, Norfolk State, Stephen F. Austin., Arkansas State, Central Missouri, La. Tech and Alabama State.

As they were last week, the Hawks will be streamed online thanks to's BOWLTV. Each day the soulful sounds of Lucas Wiseman will be calling the action from the International Training and Research Center in Arlington, Texas.

UMES looks to seniors Anggie Ramirez (Bogota, Colombia) and T'nia Falbo (Greensburg, Pa.) as well as reigning MEAC Bowler of the Week Valentina Collazos (Cali, Colombia) to set the pace. The Hawks enter the event with a 52-8 overall record.

"Wins are important," said Frahm. "Not only so we need to see the other teams and put up count, we need to win, and that is a big part of the NCAA Championship selection."

UMES will open the day with five four-game Baker matches, then on Saturday bowl five traditional matches. They will be seeded into bracket play. The first match on day three is for win/loss only and the final two counts toward the final standings.
