MILLSBORO, Delaware -

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore entered Day 2 of competition at its host tournament — The Hawk Classic — in third place and just 177 pins off the lead. Saturday’s Traditional competition saw the Hawks go 3-2 with wins against MEAC rival Delaware State (1,110-996), Kutztown (1,006-867) and Franklin Pierce (996-837).

Junior Alexandra Hernandez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) led the team on Saturday with a five-game average of 209.20, which was good enough for eighth place individually. She rolled a 232 in the opening win against Delaware State and a 223 in the day’s final game against Franklin Pierce.

Teammate and classmate Jacqueline Rhoda (Portage Indiana) was close behind in 12th place with a 206.20 average and two high games of 215.

Senior Melanie Copey (Ontario, New York) put up a 224, to go with Rhoda’s 213 and Hernandez’s 212.

The two Hawks losses came to Caldwell (961-880) and North Carolina A&T State (946-932).
