DOVER, Del. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's bowling team is on familiar ground, sitting atop the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) standings. The Hawks opened the conference season this weekend in Dover, Del. with the first of three MEAC Northern Division meets. They went 9-1 on the weekend and sit in first place.

UMES closed out the weekend on a high note, going a perfect 5-0 Sunday. They opened with a win over rival Delaware State 769-752 in the four-game Baker format matches. UMES won three of the four games, with the highest game coming in the second with a 248-242 edge.

Morgan State was the next win as the Hawks underperformed 712-656 but were still good enough to win. They again took three of the four games in the match, their best this time, a 200.

Coppin State was win number three (750-663) but the upstart Eagles bowled well, topping UMES in game two 202-200 and tying them in game three at 192. UMES used large wins in games one and four to secure the win.

Games four and five saw UMES roll through Howard (746-597) and Hampton (809-547) winning all four games in each match.

All eight Hawks saw action on Sunday.

Previously, on Saturday, UMES struggled again with pin count on the challenging NCAA Pattern #4. It was the same issue last weekend at the N.J. Jamboree with the same pattern.

Junior All-American Mariana Alvarado (Leon, Mexico) used last weekend to figure it out however as she posted a dominant 1056 pin fall over five games, averaging over a 211. Her best game, a 236, came in the loss to Delaware State.

The reigning MEAC Bowler of the Week, Sara Pelayo (Distrito Federal, Mexico) was the only other Hawk to start all five games. Pelayo posted a total of 974 over her five games, averaging just under a 195. She finished strong however, rolling a 209, 208 and 207 over the last three wins.

Tatiana Munoz (Ibague Tolima, Colombia) and Valerie Riggin (Vista, Calif.) were also solid. Munoz tied Alvarado with the highest game of the day, posting a 236 in the win over Howard while she also tallied a 234 in the Hampton win. Riggin also shot a pair of games over 200, getting a 212 in the Morgan State win and a 202 in the win over Coppin State.

UMES hosts the annual Hawk Classic, sponsored by Brunswick, next weekend, November 15-17 in Millsboro, Del. at Millsboro Lanes. Admission is free to the 17-team event, featuring many of the nation's top teams.
