The Shore moves up to fifth after Day 2 at Bearcat Open, tops Sam Houston, Vandy

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore bowling squad moved up one spot to fifth place after the dust settled at the McKendree Brunswick Bearcat Open on Day 2 (Oct. 28).

The Hawks went 3-1 in four traditional team matches picking up huge wins against No. 5 Sam Houston State and No. 3 Vanderbilt.

Junior Jacqueline Rhoda (Portage, Indiana) averaged 218.60 including a high game of 257 — on her way to third place. Rhoda bowled four games above 220, but struggled through a tough second game and finished behind McKendrees Sara Wille (223.80) and Nebraskas Kelly Belzeski (218.80).

Senior Melanie Copey (Ontario, New York) was 15th with a 202.20 over five games including a high of 229.

The shore opened the day with a 1,003-811 win against St. Francis College Brooklyn before gutting out an 856-853 win against Sam Houston.

Rhoda led the way against St. Francis with a 221 and Copey rolled a 210. Freshman Brittany-Ann OConnell (Beavercreek, Ohio) hit 214 and sophomore Brigitte Jacobs (Freeport Illinois) finished with a 204.



The Hawks then picked up a 1006-989 win against Vandy where Rhoda and Copey posted 257 and 229 respectively to lead the way.

In their fourth match, the fell to No. 2 Nebraska 1,051-955, before posting a 953 in their bye. The squad closed out the day with a 954.6 average and prepared for bracket play on Sunday (Oct. 29).
