The University of Maryland Eastern Shore bowling squad finished Day 1 at the McKendree Brunswick Bearcat Open on Friday with a 3-2 record in Baker competition and a spot in sixth place heading into Day 2.

The Hawks opened with a 1,080-850 win against Valparaiso and followed that up with a 1,071-990 victory versus Youngstown State at the St. Clair Bowl in Fairview Heights, Illinois.

We started today with a bang, Hawks coach Kayla Bandy said. We had solid ball reaction and we were throwing the ball well. Later in the day, we werent making shots well, had the wrong balls in our hand, and began to falter on our spares.

After that, they sandwiched a pair of losses to Lincoln Memorial (906-852) and Central Missouri (939-899) around their third triumph of the day, 920-691, facing North Central College.

Tomorrow we will make changes a little faster and execute shots for longer, Bandy said. Jacqueline Rhoda (Portage, Indiana) bowled phenomenal in the tenth frame for us today. She doubled in the tenth frame nine times while filling 100 percent of 25 tenth frames. Jalesa Johnson (Delmar, Delaware) and Melanie Copey (Ontario, New York) had a solid start to their senior year.
