PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – It was a very quiet week this past week for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletics program as just one team was in action. The women’s basketball team traveled to Jacksonville, Fla., to compete in the Lady Osprey Holiday Classic on the campus of the University of North Florida. The team went 1-1 at the event, where they defeated the hosts on the final day of action.

Let’s take a look at action from this past week:

The Lady Hawks went 1-1 this past weekend at the Lady Osprey Holiday Classic in Jacksonville, Fla.

The women began their trip to Florida with a 77-72 loss to Campbell. The team trailed by just two at the half, 39-37, where the Hawks shot nearly 40-percent from the floor. The Lady Camels extended their lead to double-digits in the early stages of the second-half, but the Hawks would bring the lead to just three, 63-60, after two free-throws by senior Karona Roach (Bear, Del.) with six minutes left to play. UMES was unable to tame a vicious Campbell offense the rest of the way and would fall in the opening game of the tournament.

Roach led the way with 18 points, three assists and five rebounds. Senior Sha-Kiyla Finney (Portsmouth, Va.) also had 18 points to compliment three steals, while freshman Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) had six points and six boards.

The Hawks would win their first road match of the year in the final game of the tournament, when UMES defeated North Florida, 54-52, on Saturday afternoon. UMES used a 50-percent clip from long-range in the first-half to take a ten-point lead after one frame. The women held the Lady Ospreys to just a few baskets through the first 15 minutes of play, but had to pin down a late UNF rally to hold onto the win.

Roach once again was the top scorer with 19 points and five rebounds. Sophomore Jessica Long (Ft. Washington, Md.) had 10 points and was 7-for-8 from the charity stripe, while sophomore Shanyce Stewart (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) had nine rebounds. The team combined to force 21 turnovers in the match.
