HAWK-TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF HAWK ATHLETICS
Dec. 6, 2010
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- In the final month of 2010, the UMES winter season is in full swing. It was an up and down week for the Hawks, as men's and women's basketball both fell on the road, but bowling stood strong against MEAC plus indoor track had a strong start to their 2010-11 campaign.
Down by five nearly midway through the first half, UMES put together a 13-0 run in four minutes, including eight points by junior Dishawn Bradshaw (Baltimore, Md.) and the other five by redshirt sophomore Mark Robertson (Lakewood, N.J.), to give the Hawks a 23-15 lead. With the game tied at the half, the Hornets built a ten-point lead in the next ten minutes and did not relinquish the advantage.
Redshirt junior Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led the way for UMES, scoring 16 points off 6-of-16 shooting. Bradshaw had his sixth double digit game in his first year with the Hawks, ending with 12 points. Junior Tyler Hines scored two points with nine rebounds.
A little less than seven minutes into the game, senior Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) hit a three-point shot to give the Hawks a 13-12 lead. However, Syracuse went on a 19-2 run in the next ten minutes. UMES could not close the gap but had a strong second half, scoring just six points less than their opponent.
Morton finished with 12 points, her third double-digit total in as many games this season. Junior Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) ended with 11 points and three steals.
Senior Maria Rodriguez (Ibague Tolima, Colombia) bowled an average of 226.6 in head-to-head play, including a 278 in her final game. Sophomore T'nia Falbo (Greensburg, Pa.) averaged 209 in four games and freshman Megan Buja (Rockford, Ill.) bowled three games with an average of 206.
Two UMES athletes qualified for the IC4A Tournament in March with their performances. Marcus Brown (Gaithersburg, Md.) finished first in the shot put with a distance of 15.8 meters, qualifying by 0.2 meters, and Jermol Dix (Catonsville, Md.) finished fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.15 seconds, beating the IC4A time by 0.1 seconds.
