NORFOLK, Va. – Today, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) revealed their 2013-14 women’s preseason poll and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s basketball team was projected to finish ninth in the conference.

The Lady Hawks received 257 points, including one first-place vote. Hampton received the most points (658) and first-place votes (20); thus, claiming the top spot. Other notable poll finishes included North Carolina A&T receiving four first-place votes and projected to finish second (559). Coppin State also received one first-place vote and predicted to take third in the conference (457). Last season, UMES finished tenth in the conference and lost in the first round of the MEAC Tournament to Morgan State.

On the same day, the MEAC released the women’s preseason honors and Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, VA) was the lone Lady Hawk to receive honors as she earned MEAC Preseason Second Team. Last season, Claybrooks appeared in 28 games with 15 starts while averaging 7.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, and led the team in field goal percentage (47%). Claybrooks earned MEAC Rookie of the Week twice and earned a place on the All-MEAC Rookie Team along with teammate Alexis Udoji (Randolph, MA).

Other notable recognitions included Jasmine Grice (Florida A&M) and Alyssa Bennett (Hampton) sharing MEAC Preseason Player of the Year honors. Every institution in the conference, except Howard and North Carolina Central, had a minimum one player to receive All-MEAC Preseason recognition. Five schools, Florida A&M, Hampton, Coppin State, North Carolina A&T, and Bethune-Cookman, had multiple players earn honors.
