Aug. 10, 2017

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – In June, the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) announced its women’s field for its annual Thanksgiving college basketball tournament with the Maryland Eastern Shore Women’s Basketball team among the participants.

On July 19, UAA revealed its pairing for the 2017 GCI Great Alaska Shootout with Eastern Shore taking on the host team opening night (Nov. 21). The contest starts midnight eastern time, 8 p.m. Alaska Time, at UAA’s new 5,000-seat Alaska Airlines Center.

“We are honored and extremely excited about the opportunity to participate in the historical Great Alaska Shootout,” said Hawks head coach Fred Batchelor. “We look forward to representing our program, institution and league.”

Maryland Eastern Shore takes part in the nation’s longest-running regular-season college basketball tournament. Since 1978, UAA has hosted the event every Thanksgiving week.

Eastern Shore becomes the first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) representative to compete in the historic tourney and only the second participant from the state of Maryland.

The Shore’s first opponent, the UAA Seawolves, ranks among the top Division II programs in the nation with consecutive 30-win seasons, led by Ryan McCarthy.

“To open up against Alaska Anchorage will prove to be a great challenge,” Batchelor added. “Coach McCarthy has done a tremendous job. We’re looking forward to the matchup.”

The other first round matchup features Binghamton and Tulsa.

After a day off, all four squads retake the court on Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 23) for the consolation and championship games.

“This will be a huge experience,” said Batchelor. “We are thankful for the opportunity to expose our student-athletes to such a renovating experience of traveling and competing in the great state of Alaska.”

Coach Batchelor and the Hawks will announce their 2017-18 schedule within the upcoming weeks.
