LADY HAWKS WRAP-UP REGULAR SEASON AGAINST DELAWARE STATE
March 5, 2014
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – With less than a week until the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament in Norfolk, Va., the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s basketball team takes on the Lady Hornets of Delaware State University (DSU) in the regular season finale inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center tomorrow (03/06) on UMES Senior Day. Game-time is booked for 5:30 p.m. (EST)
Prior to tip-off, UMES will recognize seniors Shanyce Stewart (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and Breonna Evans (Melfa, Va.) as they will compete in their final home game as members of the UMES women’s basketball team.
Maryland Eastern Shore battled until the final buzzer, but was unable to complete the comeback as they fell to the Spartans of Norfolk State University, 61-57. Nearly four minutes into the second half, the Lady Hawks tied the game, 32-32, after going on a 12-6 run, sparked by back-to-back steals and layups from Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) within the first minute of the half. In the next six minutes, Maryland Eastern Shore took their largest lead of the game, 43-39, after a layup from Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.).
The Spartans regained their composure and reclaimed the lead, 58-49, with less than four minutes in regulation, but the Lady Hawks refused to give in. Within the next two minutes, UMES scored six unanswered points to cut the deficit to a one-possession game, 60-57. A free-throw from Norfolk State’s Koryn Lawrence sealed the deal for the Spartans as they knocked off UMES, 61-57.
UMES was nearly perfect from the free-throw line as the team shot 93-percent (14-of-15), led by Long ending her night with a game-high 19 points, including a perfect 7-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Other notable Hawk performances included Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) recording nine points, including 4-of-4 from the free-throw line, while Claybrooks and Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) each notched eight points in the loss.
Both clubs come in with identical conference records, 3-12, and currently eleventh and twelfth, respectively, in the MEAC standings. This contest is vital for both teams as the winner of this game will secure the eleventh spot and momentum into the tournament.
As of today, DSU holds the tiebreaker as they defeated Maryland Eastern Shore, 79-68, inside Memorial Hall Gymnasium (Dover, Del.) on February 22nd.
In that contest, Claybrooks controlled the paint as she recorded her seventh career double-double, 14 points and 15 boards, while Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) added 10 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
For Delaware State, they shot over 53-percent (26-of-49) from the floor, including nearly 67-percent (8-of-12) from beyond the arc. Raven Bankston scored a new career-high 36 points, the most by any individual opponent this season. N’Kayah Kersey netted 13 points whereas Jade Washington registered 11 points in the victory.
Since then, Bankston continues to guide the Lady Hornets with the absence of 2013-14 MEAC Women’s Basketball Preseason Second Teamer, Tierra Hawkins, due to a season-ending injury. Bankston, a three-time MEAC Player of the Week honoree and candidate for MEAC Rookie of the Year, averages 21.0 points-per-game (PPG) while shooting 73-percent (108-of-149) from the charity stripe. Denna Harmon is another DSU player to watch as she registers 11.6PPG and 6.8 rebounds-per-game (RPG) for the Lady Hornets.
For the Lady Hawks, they are looking to snap a four-game skid and get in the win column prior to the MEAC Tournament. Long spearheads the Hawk attack, posting 14.6PPG. Sweeney ranks among the top sharpshooters in the nation while averaging just below ten points-per-game (9.9). Claybrooks continues to provide low-post presence for the Lady Hawks, averaging 8.1PPG and 7.6RPG. Click Here to view UMES Game Notes versus Delaware State.
