Freshman forward Bairesha Gill-Miles (Lexington, Kentucky) spent almost the entire season leading the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in scoring and rebounding — giving up the lead for only a few games.

From the moment she stepped on the court for the Hawks she has stood out.

On Friday, the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference took notice as she was named the Rookie of the Year as voted on by the league’s coaches and sports information directors.

“It is a great recognition for Bairesha first year playing for our program and for her to as a freshman to lead us in points and rebounds, it shows her impact — and hopefully is an indication of what is to come over the next couple years,” Hawks coach Fred Batchelor said.

The Hawks haven’t had a player win Rookie of the year honors since the 2007-08 season when current assistant coach Casey Morton took the honors. Gill-Miles is just the second winner during Batchelor’s 14 seasons on The Shore.

“The greatest challenge now is following that up with three bigger years than your first year,” Batchelor said.

Gill-Miles ranked eighth in the MEAC with 7.9 rebounds per contest, while also averaging 10.6 points per game. She was named MEAC Rookie of the Week six times, and Gill-Miles recorded six double-doubles this season — including a stretch of four in a row from Jan. 22 through Feb. 5. She scored a season-high 20 points against North Carolina Central, and the 15 rebounds she grabbed against Coppin State and Florida A&M were also a season best.

She scored in double digits 18 times and also shot 45 percent from the field — second to just junior Dominique Walker, who played just 15 games due to injury.

“I just really want to congratulate her and her family,” Batchelor said. “It’s a great accomplishment for a young lady to be recognized as the best freshman in the league and it shows we both made a great choice.

“We made a great choice in recruiting her and she made a great choice in coming to our league.”

Eastern Shore (10-18, 7-9 MEAC) will next play on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. against Dealware State in the opening round of the MEAC Tournament, at the Scope in Norfolk, Virginia.
