HAWK TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF UMES ATHLETICS
Feb. 18, 2013
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletics program had six teams in action this past week. The action was highlighted by the women’s indoor track team, who placed second at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships and had several players post huge performances. The bowling team won the Morgan State Invitational, while the baseball and women’s basketball teams each notched one victory apiece. The men’s indoor track team was sixth at the MEAC Championships and the men’s basketball team rounded out action with two losses.
Let’s take a look at action from this past week:
The UMES baseball team opened up its 2013 campaign with a 1-1 record at Winthrop this past weekend. The Hawks opened the season with a 2-1 loss in 10 innings, before they won the final game of the series, 7-4, on Sunday.
UMES saw sophomore Thomas Gray (Delmar, Del.) go 2-for-4 with three RBI in the victory. Senior Tre-von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) was 3-for-5 with one RBI and junior Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) and freshman Mike Escanilla (Waldorf, Md.) each had two hits and two runs. Junior Bernard Parker (Waldorf, Md.) picked up the win with 3.2 innings of scoreless ball and sophomore Devin Repine (Salisbury, Md.) pitched a scoreless last inning for his first collegiate save.
In UMES’ loss on Friday, senior Jesus Hernandez (Haverstraw, N.Y.) threw five innings of scoreless ball, while allowing just one hit. Escanilla was the top performer with the bat as he had one hit and one run scored. The UMES pitching staff allowed just six hits and struck out five Eagles.
For the seventh time this season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) claimed an event championship, this time knocking off Nebraska and Arkansas State, both 4-1, to take first-place at the 2013 installment of the James Brown Invitational, hosted by Morgan State University.
After overcoming a rough day one, finishing in sixth place, the Hawks rebounded to finish day two in third place. That set up a match on day three with second-seeded Nebraska in the best four-of-seven Baker series.
Freshman Kristie Lopez (Ponce, Puerto Rico) was named to the All-Tournament Team for her outing yesterday, taking fourth overall with a 211.4 with a 1,057 pin fall over five games. Senior T’nia Falbo (Greenburg, Pa.) was the next highest finisher for the Hawks in 24th, averaging a 196.8.
UMES went 0-2 this past week and now sit at 1-20 overall and 1-9 in the MEAC.
The team dropped an 85-63 loss at Norfolk State last Monday. The Hawks were behind by double digits at halftime and saw its deficit grow larger in the second half. UMES was led by freshman Kevin Mays (Queens, N.Y.), who had 20 points and five steals, while freshman Dominique Cowell (Hampton, Va.) had 10 points. Norfolk State shot nearly 50-percent from the floor in the game.
UMES fell on Homecoming Weekend to Morgan State by a score of 87-55. The Hawks were led in the game by junior Olatunji Kosile (Lagos, Nigeria) with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Mays posted 10 points and eight boards. UMES shot just 31-percent from the floor and turned the ball over 19 times.
The Lady Hawks went 1-1 on the week. UMES opened up with a 54-51 loss at Norfolk State, before the women claimed a 54-50 victory over Morgan State on Homecoming Weekend.
In the loss at NSU, UMES was behind by a substantial amount for most of the game. The Lady Hawks, however, would go on a furious run across the last 8:47 of play and rebounded from being 20 points down to just two with four minutes left. The Hawks used several big baskets by senior Karona Roach (Bear, Del.) and a clutch three-pointer by senior Sha-Kiyla Finney (Portsmouth, Va.) during the span.
UMES was led in the game by Roach, who had 19 points. Finney also chipped in with 10 points as she was a perfect 10-for-10 from the charity stripe with three steals.
UMES rebounded with a 54-50 win against Morgan State. Much like the first contest of the week, UMES trailed early in the contest. The Lady Hawks mounted another furious comeback, but this time took the advantage and never looked back. Freshman center Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) made a layup with 3:53 left to give UMES the lead and the women did not trail again. Claybrooks led the team with 14 points and eight rebounds.
