Hawks look to rally at Howard
Feb. 12, 2018

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore hopes to prove that past performance is actually indicative of future results as it attempts to get back into the win column against a Howard squad it defeated at home back in January.

The 58-52 Eastern Shore victory was part of the only win streak (two-games) of the season for the squad and a stretch of three victories in four games.

The Hawks (7-16, 4-7 MEAC) have been trending up late in the season and have won three of five and were within one point of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference No. 1 Bethune-Cookman with minutes left on Saturday (Feb. 10).

But when the conference takes stock of the season after the next five games, the only things that will matter is the MEAC record for seeding.

Hawks coach Fred Batchelor saw enough recently that he was ready to buy in on his squad being able to challenge the best teams in the MEAC. But the last time out was against one of the conference’s top performers and four of the team’s final five games are against teams ahead of the shore in the standings.

Measuring up to those team’s means taking advantages of opportunities on offense that pay dividends in big moments.

Since the loss at Eastern Shore, the Bison (10-13, 6-4 MEAC) have won three straight, including a 68-61 victory against rival Hampton. Currently, Howard sits tied for fourth in the conference standings with Norfolk State. Sophomore Sarah Edmond leads the squad in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per contest, followed by Williams (9.2). Over the past three games, freshman sharpshooter Jayla Thornton, last week’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week, is shooting 48-percent (12-of-25) from long range.

Bairesha Gill-Miles (Lexington, Kentucky) leads the Hawks in scoring (11.1 points per game) and rebounding (7.8 rebounds per), but saw a streak of five games with 10+ rebounds broken against the Wildcats when she finished with nine.

Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem North Carolina) is second on the team with 9.5 pointer per game and has reached double digits in three straight.

After the Howard game, The Shore will head out on a two-game North Carolina road trip to face Central (Feb. 17) and A&T State (Feb. 19).
