PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—UMES men’s basketball freshman Hakeem Baxter (Philadelphia, Pa.) and women’s basketball freshman Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) have been named the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Peninsula Regional Medical Center Athletes of the Week for the week ending on February 4th. This is the fifth time Baxter has been named to this award, and the first time for McCoy.

Baxter shined in last Saturday’s win versus North Carolina A&T at the Hytche Center. In thirty-one minutes of playing time, Hakeem compiled 26 points, adding two assists and a rebound. His dunk with 2:24 left in the game along with clutch free throws down the stretch helped stave off a 30-7 A&T run and seal the win for the Hawks. Baxter has started all but three games this season and currently ranks second in points per game with 14.6. Hakeem is also averaging four rebounds per game, and has added twenty assists and twelve steals this season.

McCoy had a breakout performance in the Lady Hawks’ non-conference finale versus NJIT last Wednesday. The South Carolina native doubled her season average in points with her 27 point performance, going 10-for-17 from the floor and 3-for-8 from the three point line. Mariah also collected a game high and personal season high eight rebounds, while adding two assists over twenty-nine minutes. The performance earned her a start in Saturday’s game versus North Carolina A&T, where McCoy earned six points and six rebounds in the game.

Both teams will play tonight at 5:30pm/8pm the Hytche Center versus North Carolina Central, and will wrap up their homestand with a doubleheader against Coppin State on Saturday.
