PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Junior Karona Roach (Bear, Del.) and freshman Kevin Mays (Queens, N.Y.) have been named the Peninsula Regional Medical Center University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletes of the Week for the week of January 14. This is the fourth honor of the year for Roach, while Mays takes it home for the first time.

Roach was unstoppable in the women’s basketball Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference home opener against Norfolk State on Saturday. The junior notched a career-high 31 points and shot 5-for-7 from three-point range in the overtime victory. She was 10-for-13 from the free-throw line and had four rebounds, three assists and one block. Her point total in the match was the most of any Lady Hawk in nearly three years. Her work was done in a game-high 39 minutes.

Mays made his presence known in his first collegiate game at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. In UMES’ 63-58 loss against Norfolk State, he notched a double-double with career-highs in points (27) and rebounds (10). He was 7-for-13 from the free-throw line and had two steals in a team-high 33 minutes. The game was his fourth for UMES this year and he is averaging a team-best 13.5 points-per-game.
