SPARTANBURG, S.C. – In the final contest of 2016, Coach Fred Batchelor and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women’s Basketball team dropped their nonconference finale at USC Upstate, 76-63, inside the Hodge Center.

With the setback, Eastern Shore (6-5) endured their first losing streak of the season.

Guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) paved the way, posting a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 11 boards. Off the bench, junior forward Shauntesha Bryant (Syracuse, N.Y.) added 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor in a losing effort.

More than five minutes into the second half, a layup from Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) gave The Shore a three-point advantage, 34-31. Upstate battled back and retook the lead on multiple occasions. With more than two minutes left in the third, the contest was tied, 37-37, until the Spartans finished the period on a 9-2 run to take the lead after three, 46-39.

In the fourth, Eastern Shore’s scoring drought continued and the Spartans capitalized as they ballooned their advantage to double-digits, 55-39, with 6:45 remaining. Despite the deficit, Coach Batchelor’s bunch refused to give up as they sliced the margin down to single-digits, 60-51, with more than four minutes left. Although the Hawks never gave up, Upstate made clutch shots down the stretch to win, 76-63.

Other notable Hawk performances included Byrom and Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, N.C.) combining for 23 points in the loss.

The first period was a seesaw affair, but Eastern Shore took the upper-hand after one with a put back layup from Bryant at the buzzer, 15-14.

The second quarter saw similar results. Upstate’s Bailey Wensler connected a trey ball and tied the game, 24-24, with 2:45 left before halftime. The home team increased their lead to four, 28-24, but freshman guard Dayona Godwin (Ocean Pines, Md.) drilled a long ball and trimmed down to one at halftime, 28-27.

For the Spartans (6-8), they scored 40 points off the bench. Tamera Thorpe led all scorers with 27 points off the pine. Raven Jefferson chipped in 16 points while Brittney Delva recorded 13 points in the victory.
