GREENVILLE, North Carolina -

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore traveled to East Carolina University for their final contest of 2017 falling 64-54 to the Pirates (8-5) in a game which saw both teams struggle from the field.

The game was the Hawks (3-9) final tune-up before Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference regular season begins on Jan. 3. The Hawks led 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, but a 20-7 advantage by East Carolina in the second quarter put the Hawks in a 29-18 hole.

The Pirates started the second half with a 14-2 run and eventually built the lead to 22 (42-20) with 6:20 still left in the third quarter, which proved to be insurmountable.

After trailing 50-33 at the end of the third, The Shore put together a strong finish cutting the lead to single digits at one point before falling by 10.

Eastern Shore was led by senior Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, North Carolina) who finished with 11 points including 3-of-4 from behind the arc — in 20 minutes off the bench.

Junior Dominique Walker (Bel Air, Maryland) had 10 points and five boards — also off the bench. Classmate Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, North Carolina) added nine points and six rebounds.

Graduate Transfer Jordyn Smith (Durham, North Carolina) returned to the starting lineup for the first time in five games and finished with nine rebounds and five points.

The Hawks were outrebounded 54-42, but there were plenty of rebounds to go around as ECU shot 35 percent and Eastern Shore 30 percent from the field.
