BOCA RATON, Fla. – After knocking off Saint Francis (Pa.) in the opener of the FAU Holiday Tournament, Coach Fred Batchelor and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women’s Basketball team met Florida Atlantic (FAU) and defeated the Owls, 76-59, inside “The Burrow.” With the victory, Eastern Shore captured the 2016 FAU Holiday Championship.

Offensively, the Hawks (6-3) shot over 48-percent (30-of-62) from the floor, including 91-percent (10-of-11) in the fourth. Additionally, Maryland Eastern Shore dominated the paint as they outscored the opposition, 44-26.

Sophomore guard Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led all scorers with 25 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field. Senior Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) added 18 points and a game-high seven boards. As a result, both Hawks were named to the FAU Holiday All-Tournament Team.

FAU’s Melinda Myers drilled a trey ball moments into the second half and trimmed the Hawks margin down into single digits, 37-28. Within the next two minutes, guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) made a layup and pushed the lead back to double-figures, 41-30. In the third, Florida Atlantic slowly chipped away at the deficit and found themselves within striking distances after three, 49-45.

More than a minute into the final period, FAU’s Sasha Cedeno made a layup and gave the Hawks only a four-point advantage, 53-49. Within the next two minutes, Eastern Shore went on a 9-0 spurt and retook control, 62-49. Midway through the fourth, Florida Atlantic cut the margin down to 10 points, 62-52, but The Shore would be too much as they won, 76-59.

Other notable Hawk performances included Subritzky recording 16 points on 70-percent (7-of-10) shooting from the floor. Furthermore, the New Zealand native became the 10th Hawk in history to make 100 three-pointers in a career.

After trailing 6-5 early, Maryland Eastern Shore went on a 13-1 run, capped off by a jumper from sophomore guard Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, N.C.). Florida Atlantic battled back and sliced the margin down to seven after one, 19-12.

Early into the second, Byrom’s layup gave the Hawks a double-digit advantage, 22-12. FAU trimmed the deficit down to single-digits momentarily, but the Hawks responded. Just under the six-minute mark, Byrom made a fastbreak layup and put The Shore ahead double-figures again, 25-14. For the remaining six minutes, Eastern Shore kept the Owls from making a run; thus, holding a 37-25 advantage at the half.

For FAU (4-7), Raven Doyle was the only Owl to reach double-figures with 15 points. Malia Kency and Nika Zyryanova each registered nine points in the loss.

On Dec. 21, the Hawks continue their road swing in Charlottesville, Va. where they will meet the Virginia Cavaliers. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside the John Paul Jones Arena.
