NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s basketball team fell to the Lady Monarchs, 82-57, despite keeping the game close in the second half until ODU’s late surge would give them the victory. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 3-5 overall while ODU improved to 5-4 on the season.

Starting the second half down, 41-27, the Lady Hawks started the second half on a 6-0 run, including a three-point tray by Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.), 41-33. The Lady Monarchs withstood UMES early surge by increasing their lead back to double-digits, 45-35, until the Lady Hawks scored the next five-out-of-seven-points to pull the game within seven, 47-40, with more than 13 minutes to go in the game. In the next five minutes, ODU reclaimed the momentum and pushed the lead to 11 points, 56-45, with over eight minutes in regulation. The Lady Hawks fought throughout the game, but the Lady Monarchs were too much as they ended the contest on a 26-12 run to win, 82-57.

Sweeney recorded 18 points and six boards while Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) had 10 points and a team-high five assists. Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) registered eight points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

In the first half, UMES Head Coach Fred Batchelor requested an early timeout within the first three minutes of the game after trailing, 6-4. After the Lady Hawks’ timeout, ODU went on a 9-0 run to extend their lead, 13-4, with over 15 minutes in the half. Within the next seven minutes, the Lady Monarchs balloon their lead to as much as 19 points, 28-9, as the Lady Hawks went on a scoring drought. UMES battled back and cut ODU’s lead down to 11 points, 38-27, until a three-pointer by the Lady Monarchs’ LaQuanda Younger made the halftime score, 41-27.

For the Lady Monarchs, Shae Kelly posted a double-double with 24 points and 13 boards. Chelisa Painter added 14 points and eight rebounds while Tiffany Minor and Galaisha Goodhope each recorded 10 points in the win.

The Lady Hawks continue their seven-game road trip as they head to Norman, Okla. to face #15 Oklahoma on Sunday, Dec. 15th. Tip-off is 2:00 p.m.
