WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s basketball team came up short to Monmouth University, 67-65, despite outscoring the opposition in the second half, 37-31. With the loss, the Lady Hawks fell to 3-4 overall while Monmouth improved to 1-7.

After trailing at halftime, 36-28, back-to-back three-pointers by Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) narrowed the gap to four points, 38-34, within the first two minutes in the second half. Over the next seven minutes, Monmouth extended the lead back to eight, 52-44. The Lady Hawks went on a 6-1 run to cut the deficit to three points, 53-50, with less than eight to play. In the next five minutes, UMES’ run continued as they took the lead, 61-60, with over three minutes in the game. Monmouth rallied late to finish the game on a 7-4 run to win, 67-65.

Four Lady Hawks were in double-figures led by Sweeney (13). Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) recorded her fifth-career double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Chalyse Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) notched 12 points and TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) came off the bench to score 10 points in the loss.

In the first nine minutes of action, UMES led, 18-9, until Monmouth went on an 8-3 run to cut the Lady Hawks’ lead down to four points, 21-17, with just over nine minutes in the half. UMES Head Coach Fred Batchelor requested a 30-second timeout to regroup his team. After the timeout, Monmouth’s momentum continued as they tied the game, 24-24, with less than seven to play in the first half and finished the half on a 12-4 run to take the lead, 36-28.



For Monmouth, Chevannah Paalvast led all scorers with 20 points. Danica Dragicevic chipped in nine points while Shira Shecht, Jasmine Walker, and Mia Hopkins each tallied eight points in the victory.

The Lady Hawks travel to Norfolk, Va. to face the Lady Monarchs of Old Dominion University on Saturday, Dec. 7th. Tip-off is 7:00 p.m.
