UMES DROPS MEAC OPENER TO DELAWARE STATE 67-52
Dec. 1, 2012
DOVER, Del. --The Lady Hawks had no answer for Tierra Hawkins's 28 points as they fell in their MEAC opener to Delaware State 67-52 at Memorial Hall. UMES goes to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the MEAC, while DSU improves to 2-3 this season and 1-0 in conference play.
UMES and Delaware State played with a clash of styles, with the Lady Hawks playing to their size advantage and DSU going up-tempo with their speed.
Led by four early points by Deanna Harmon, Delaware State jumped out to an early 8-4 advantage. UMES cut the deficit to two off a putback layup from Alexis Udoji(Randolph, Mass.) to pull within two 8-6 with 16:07 to play in the half.
Off the scoring of Harmon and Tierra Hawkins, DSU built its lead to 17-9 with 8:49 remaining in the period.
UMES started getting hot from the three, as Karona Roach (Bear, Del.) buried a three-pointer up-top the arc to end a UMES scoring drought of over five minutes. After a Hawkins layup, UMS countered with threes from Kiana Sturgis (Pocomoke City, Md.) and Sha-Kiyla Finney(Portsmouth, Va.) to get within one 19-18.
The defense held DSU without a field goal for over four-and-a-half minutes, as Saisha Coleman(Baltimore, Md.) converted a layup for her first basket of the year, giving UMES a 20-19 lead with 4:31 left in the first half.
Play went back and forth as each side exchanged baskets, as a pair of Jessica Long(Fort Washington, Md.) baskets kept the Maroon and Gray ahead 24-23. Later, a Tasia Bristow layup was countered by a Roach basket to push UMES back up by one at the 1:26 mark in the period.
Following a Hawkins layup and Sturgis free throw make, Bristow hit a runner at the first half buzzer for a 29-27 DSU lead at the break.
Both offenses picked up at the start of the second period, as an early Roach jumper tied it up at 29 in the half's opening minute. But the Lady Hornets responded with an 8-2 run from Hawkins and Keyanna Tate to go up 37-31.
Later, Long hit a couple of jumpers off a couple of fast breaks to put UMES within four 42-38 at the 13:08 mark, forcing Delaware State to call a timeout. DSU responded with a Bristow layup then five straight Hawkins points over four minutes of time for a 49-38 advantage.
Roach and Long each tried to keep UMES within striking distance, countering DSU baskets. A Long three followed by two made free throws got the Lady Hawks within ten 57-47 with 6:47 left, later getting to 59-49 a minute later.
Despite strong defensive efforts, the Lady Hawks could not stop Hawkins down the stretch, as DSU took the game 67-52.
Roach led the Lady Hawks in scoring for the third consecutive game with 14 points, adding five rebounds and a team-high six steals. Long added 13 points with four rebounds, while Ashleigh Claybrooks(Manassas, Va.) earning a career-high nine rebounds with four points and two blocks.
Hawkins led all scorers with 28 points off 12-15 shooting, adding three steals and a squad-best seven rebounds. Bristow and Harmon each contributed 13 points, with the ladder adding four steals.
UMES returns to non-conference action this Wednesday with a road match against Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Maryland at 7 p.m.
