Chelsea Sanders lead team with 14pts and 7rebs

The UMES women's basketball team took on Colonial Athletic Association defending champions James Madison Thursday night at the hostile Convocation Center in Harrisonburg, Va. The Lady Hawks came out fighting with strong team play to begin the game.

Junior Chelsea Sanders and senior Caitlyn Dillard sparked the team's offense both scoring seven first half points to lead the team. Sanders pulled down four rebounds to aid in UMES's first half rebounding dominance with a 14 -7 rebounding advantage.

James Madison, lead by the three point shooting of Kirby Burkholder, put up a fight of their own. Burkholder tallied 16 first half points behind 4 of 9 shooting from behind the arc. The UMES defense held the Dukes to 34.3% shooting for the half, however still trailed 35-27 at the half.

The Lady Hawks continued their fight, beginning the second half with a 9-3 run. After forcing a James Madison turnover, UMES cut the lead to 38-35 following a layup by guard Dillard. Dillard would finish with a career high 10 points to go along with 2 steals and 3 assists. For the second straight game Sanders lead the team with 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Although pressed the Dukes would not fold. Behind starting guard Tarik Hislop, James Madison would maintain the lead, never trailing in the half. Hislop scored 12 of her game total 16 points in the second half to help hand UMES a 61-53 loss.

UMES women's basketball will head home to take on Canisius on Monday, November 21 at 6:00p.m. The team will look to continue their fight to get its first win at home and first win of the season.
