COLLEGE PARK, Md. – In their first road test of the season, Coach Fred Batchelor and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women’s Basketball team battled to the very end as they fell to No. 6/5 Maryland, 106-61, inside the XFINITY Center.

Despite winning the turnover battle and getting to the charity stripe, Maryland’s inside game would be the biggest difference. The Shore were outscored in the paint 72-22 and the Terps outrebounded the Maroon & Gray 61-25.

Sophomore guard Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) led the way with a team-high 14 points and three dimes. Senior Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) chipped in 10 points in a losing effort.

Eastern Shore opened the second half on a 7-2 run, capped off by McCoy’s jumper, and cut the deficit to 20 points, 56-36. Maryland regained the momentum and extended the margin back to 26 with 4:39 left in the third. The Shore fought back and trimmed the Terp’s lead down to 20 again, 70-50, after a long ball from Shauntesha Bryant (Syracuse, N.Y.). At that point, College Park took control and finished the quarter on a 10-0 spurt, 80-50.

In the fourth, Maryland kept the pressure on and outscored Eastern Shore 26-11 to win 106-61.

Other notable Hawk performances included Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and Tori Morris (Herndon, Va.) each with nine points. Juniors Bryant and Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.) added seven points in the loss.

Maryland began the contest on an 8-0 run, but Byrom’s three-pointer would put The Shore on the board. Nearly midway through the first, McCoy’s trey ball slimmed the margin down to five, 16-11, but the Terps found momentum and closed the quarter on a 16-6 spurt, 32-17.

In the second, Eastern Shore clawed their way back, but College Park would be too much as they outscored the Hawks 22-12 and took a commanding 54-29 halftime lead.

For Maryland (2-0), six Terps registered double-figures, led by Shatori Walker-Kimbrough with a game-high 19 points. Off the bench, Jenna Staiti posted a double-double with 14 boards and 10 points in 10 minutes of action.

The Shore’s (1-1) road trip continues in Baltimore where the UMBC Retrievers await. Game-time is set for 1 p.m. inside the RAC Arena.
