PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – In their season opener, sophomore guard Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, N.C.) guided the Hawks to victory as they knocked off Cheyney, 75-38, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

With the win, Eastern Shore picked up their first season opening victory in six years. Furthermore, The Shore extended its regular-season winning streak to seven, dating back to last season.

All 12 Hawks who played scored, led by Eaton with a career-high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. Defensively, the North Carolina product also set a new career best in steals with four thefts.

In the third, Maryland Eastern Shore clamped down on the defensive end as they held the Wolves without a field goal (0-of-12) and only five points. Offensively, the Hawks ballooned the margin as high as 26 points after a layup from Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.), 56-30.

Next quarter, the pressure continued as Cheyney was limited to seven points on 3-of-14 shooting from the floor. With less than a minute remaining, two freebies from Chioma Nkpuechina (Anambra, Nigeria) gave Eastern Shore their biggest lead and made the final score 75-38.

Other notable Hawks included junior Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.) tallying 10 points on 50-percent (4-of-8) shooting from the floor. Senior Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) nearly earned a double-double as she ended with nine points and eight boards in the victory.

The Shore jumped out to an early lead after one, 24-11, led by Eaton’s 12 points. In the second, a long ball from Ra’Jean Martin (Jacksonville, Fla.) pushed the lead to 20 points, 40-20, with 3:24 remaining. Cheyney battled back and closed the half on a 6-0 spurt to make the halftime score 40-26.

For Cheyney (0-1), they were held to under 20-percent (12-of-61) from the floor. After intermission, the Wolves could not find any rhythm as they recorded only 12 points. TaKayla Ellis and Briana Hedgepeth each had nine points in a losing effort.

On Nov. 16, the Hawks travel to College Park where the highly-ranked Maryland Terps await. Game-time is set for 6:30 p.m. inside the XFINITY Center.
