PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – In their final tune-up before the regular season, Coach Fred Batchelor and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women’s Basketball team soared as they knocked off nearby Salisbury, 76-48, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

Overall, the club shot a respectable 42-percent (29-of-69) from the floor; however, a big second quarter would be the difference as they recorded a scorching 79-percent (11-of-14) from the field.

Junior Shauntesha Bryant (Syracuse, N.Y.) had a big night off the bench, registering a game-high 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field. Center Tori Morris (Herndon, Va.) also reached double-figures with 10 points in the victory.

After a slow start, the Hawks found rhythm towards the end of the first period and took an early advantage, 15-8. In the second period, freshman guard Dayona Godwin (Ocean Pines, Md.) provided a spark as she tallied eight points. Morris and sophomore Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) each posted seven points in the second quarter. As a result, The Shore outscored Salisbury 28-12 in the second and took a commanding 43-20 lead at the half.

After intermission, Maryland Eastern Shore’s hot streak continued with a 50-percent shooting effort in the third; thus, increasing the Seagulls’ deficit, 64-31. In the fourth, Salisbury battled back, but the Hawks were too much as they won, 76-48.

Byrom and Godwin each finished with nine points while senior guard Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) returned after a season-ending injury a year ago and recorded eight points in the win.

For Salisbury, Josephine Nonnan had a team-high eight points while Kaylyn French and Paige Bryce each ended with seven points in the loss.

Next Friday (Nov. 11), Maryland Eastern Shore opens the regular season versus Cheyney inside the Hytche Center. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
