BALTIMORE – In their season finale, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team spoiled in-state rival Morgan State’s Senior Night with a 50-42 victory inside the Hill Field House.

With a win, the Lady Hawks (12-16, 10-6 MEAC) enter the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament with a six-game winning streak.

Despite only shooting 35-percent (18-of-52) from the floor, Maryland Eastern Shore did not allow the Lady Bears to get into a rhythm either as they held them to 26-percent (18-of-69) from the field.

Senior center Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) notched her third double-double of the season with a season-high 16 boards and 15 points in 34 minutes of action. Freshman guard Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had a game-high 18 points, six rebounds, and four dimes in the victory.

Less than 30 ticks after intermission, forward Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) tied the contest with a steal-and-layup, 20-20. Early part of the quarter, both clubs went back-and-forth. Another Udoji layup put UMES ahead, 28-26, at the 5:28 mark in the third. After three, the Lady Hawks led, 37-33.

Morgan State’s Chelsea Mitchell capped off a quick 5-0 spurt and tied the contest, 37-37, with more than eight remaining. Maryland Eastern Shore withstood the Lady Bears’ late charge as they answered the call every time. UMES made clutch freebies down the stretch to win, 50-42.

Other notable Hawk performance included forward Udoji anchoring the defensive end with eight points, six boards, four rejections, and two thefts.

Kelly scored the first point of the game with a free throw, but Morgan State’s Simone Sampson connected on a trey ball and gave the Lady Bears the early lead, 3-1. UMES had the upper hand for most of the opening period until Morgan State closed out the quarter on a 9-2 run and took the lead, 12-8.

In the second, Morgan State held the advantage until sophomore guard Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.) drilled a long ball and tied the game with less than a minute left before halftime, 18-18. Moments later, the Lady Bears’ Braennan Farrar made a layup and gave Morgan State the intermission lead, 20-18.

For the Lady Bears (12-16, 10-6 MEAC), Tykyrah Williams registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Farrar chipped in 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting in a losing effort.

Next up for Maryland Eastern Shore is the MEAC Tournament, held inside the Norfolk Scope Arena in Norfolk, Va. UMES comes in as the sixth seed and will face Howard in the opening round on Monday, March 7.
