BALTIMORE – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women’s basketball team was unable to even the score against Coppin State University (CSU) as they fell to the Eagles, 80-48, inside the Physical Education Complex.

With the loss, UMES dropped to 7-19 overall (3-11 MEAC) while CSU improved to 14-13 (11-4 MEAC) on the season.

Ten Lady Hawks scored in the contest, led by Jessica Long (Fort Washington, Md.) and Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) each registering eight points in the loss.

Coppin State’s Kyra Coleman opened the second half with a layup to push their lead to twenty, 43-23, after taking an 18-point lead at the break, 41-23. UMES battled back to cut the deficit as low as sixteen, 45-29, with less than three minutes into the second period, but this is as close as the Lady Hawks would get. With more than five minutes in regulation, the Eagles secured a 25-point lead, 68-43, and closed the game on a 12-5 run to win, 80-48.

Other notable Hawk performances included Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) and Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas. Va.) each notched eight points in a losing effort.

Less than nine minutes into the game, UMES trailed Coppin State, 15-4, but a layup from TeAmber Burke (Washington, N.C.) trimmed the deficit to single digits, 15-6. The Eagles defensive pressure continued as they forced 16 first half Lady Hawk turnovers and ballooned the lead to twenty, 33-13, with less than six minutes before halftime. Maryland Eastern Shore fought back as they cut CSU’s lead to sixteen, 37-21, after a layup from Long. Coppin State scored the final four-out-of-six points in the half to take a halftime lead, 41-23.



For Coppin State, Coleman finished with a double-double, 19 points and 10 boards, while Larrisa Carter and Ashle Carter combined for 30 points in the victory.

This Monday (03/03), the Lady Hawks play their final road contest of the regular season in Norfolk, Va. where the Spartans of Norfolk State University awaits. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. (EST)
