Final Stats

WASHINGTON – In their road finale, Coach Fred Batchelor and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women’s Basketball team suffered a setback in our Nation’s Capital as Howard (HU) knocked off the Hawks, 71-40, inside Burr Gymnasium.

With the loss, Eastern Shore dropped to 12-14 (6-9 MEAC) while HU improved to 15-12 (11-4 MEAC) on the season.

After scoring 18 points in the first quarter, Maryland Eastern Shore could not sustain their rhythm as they scored only 22 points in the final three periods combined.

Junior guard Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.) flirted with a double-double, posting 11 points and nine boards.

Nearly three minutes after intermission, a layup from guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) ended a 14-minute field goal drought for the Hawks; however, Howard built a double-digit lead in that time frame, 32-22.

Center Tori Morris (Herndon, Va.) trimmed the deficit to single-digits with a layup, 32-24, but the Bison would not let Eastern Shore back into the game. HU finished the third on a 18-4 run and took a 22-point advantage into the final quarter, 50-28.

Howard kept the pressure on as they outscored Maryland Eastern Shore in the fourth, 21-12, to win by the final score 71-40.

Other notable Hawk performance included Subritzky recording 10 points and eight rebounds in the loss. Furthermore, the New Zealand native moved into fourth on the all-time three-point scoring leaderboard, surpassing Shore Hall of Famer Nicole Council.

A pull-up jumper from Hicks gave The Shore a nine-point lead, 18-9, with 1:35 remaining in the opening period. Howard battled back and closed the quarter on a 5-0 spurt. Eastern Shore led after one, 18-14.

In the second, Maryland Eastern Shore’s shooting woes returned as they went 0-12 in the period. The Shore scored only one point in the period, thanks to a made free throw by senior forward Briana Mack (Harrisonburg, Pa.).

HU capitalized and outscored the Hawks 12-1 in the second and took a seven-point lead into halftime, 26-19.

Howard shot a respectable 41-percent (25-of-61) from the floor. Sydni Johnson led all scorers with 17 points, followed by Erin Blaine and Jasmine Hill each registering 14 points in the victory.

On March 2, Maryland Eastern Shore finishes the regular season with in-state foe Morgan State on Senior Day. Game-time is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
