PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – On a day where the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team honored five Lady Hawks for the final time inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center, the squad held on to knock off rival Delaware State (DSU), 54-49.

UMES (11-16, 9-6 MEAC) picked up their fifth consecutive victory for the first time in seven seasons.

Both clubs struggled from the field as neither team scored 20 points in a period until the fourth. Despite not making a trey ball throughout the entire game, Maryland Eastern Shore scored 37-percent of the offense from the charity stripe as they took 39 freebies.

Freshman guard Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had a game-high 19 points, including 11 points after intermission. The North Carolina native also registered seven dimes and three thefts, both career-highs.

DSU’s Mikah Aldridge nailed a long ball and trimmed UMES’ lead down to one, 35-34, with more than a minute into the fourth. Maryland Eastern Shore answered with an 8-1 spurt, capped off by a layup from Ra’Jean Martin (Jacksonville, Fla.), 43-36.

Delaware State stormed back and tied the contest after a trey ball from Ivana Negron, 47-47, with 2:46 left. UMES withstood the Lady Hornets’ late charge as they made critical plays down the stretch to win, 54-49.

Other notable Hawk performances included Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) recording 11 points and eight boards in her final game in Princess Anne.

After trailing the opening quarter, 10-7, UMES tied the contest with a layup from Byrom, 12-12. At the 4:06 mark, forward Shauntesha Bryant (Syracuse, N.Y.) connected on an elbow jumper and gave the Lady Hawks their first advantage of the game, 17-16. Maryland Eastern Shore kept the momentum going as they took a 23-18 lead into halftime.

For Delaware State (8-19, 5-9 MEAC), multiple Hornets dealt with foul trouble as they racked up 31 infractions. Aldridge was the lone player in double-figures with 10 points. Nikkei Blackburn posted a game-high 12 rebounds in a losing effort.

On March 3, Maryland Eastern Shore ends the regular season in Baltimore where the Morgan State Lady Bears await. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., followed by the men approximately 30 minutes afterward.
