PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) scored 14 points and grabbed three rebounds and three steals to lead UMES to a 53-50 win over Howard on Homecoming at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Saturday.

Morton shot 3-for-8 from the field, and including 3-for-5 from 3-point range, leading three players in double figures as UMES (9-18, 6-8 MEAC) won for the second straight season on Homecoming and snapped Howard's (13-16, 9-6) three-game winning streak. The win also broke the Lady Hawks' four-game skid.

Trailing by eight in the second half, 42-34, with 10:42 left, Morton hit a 3-pointer and Shanyce Stewart (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) knocked down a free throw to pull within, 42-38.

Saadia Doyle, who scored a game-high 18 points, responded with a three-point play at the 6:43 mark but UMES used a 7-0 run to knot the game at 45-all on a pair of free throws by Morton. She blocked a jumper by Doyle and collected the rebound, racing the length of the floor, before getting hacked from behind on the play that tied the game.

Morton then stole a Kara Smith pass and Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) hit a layup as UMES took its first lead of the second half.

After Cheyenne Curley-Payne tied the game with free throws with two minutes left, Morton knocked in a clutch 3-pointer from the wing for a 50-47 advantage and UMES didn't look back.

Chelsea Sanders (Rochester, N.Y.) and Cook finished with 11 and 10 points respectively, for UMES. Tamoria Holmes (12 points) and Curley-Payne (10) also had double figures for the Lady Bison.

UMES shot 39.1 percent for the game on 18-of-46 from the field while Howard went 18-of-56 (32.1 percent) from the floor.

UMES led by as many as six at 18-12 in the first half on an 8-0 run. Down 12-10, Cook hit a trey to start the run and Karona Roach (Bear, Del.) had a jumper.

Howard then rallied for a 20-18 lead on a Doyle layup and carried a 26-23 edge into the locker room.

UMES tied a season low with 14 turnovers and forced 18 Bison miscues, turning them into 11 points. Howard won the battle of the boards, 41-27, on the strength of 11 from Doyle.

UMES hosts Delaware State on Senior Day Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
