PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - UMES was hurt by the Hampton pressure and fell to the reigning MEAC champion 78-47 on Wednesday. The Lady Hawks fall to 7-16 overall and 3-9 in the MEAC, while Hampton goes to 21-5 this season and 12-0 in-conference.

Hampton struck quickly with its pressure, forcing turnovers and using the fast break to start the game on a 23-0 run.

Karona Roach (Bear, Del.) finally broke the scoreless streak, firing a long three from atop the arc to make it 23-3 with 9:30 left in the first half.

After five more points from Hampton, Jameelah Pickard (Greensboro, N.C.) attacked the paint and hit the shot with contact. This sparked a 10-4 run by UMES, capped by a Kiana Sturgis (Pocomoke City, Md.) three, to get the score to 32-13 Hampton.

UMES played well in the half-court defense against the Lady Pirates throughout the half, but trailed Hampton 38-18 going into the locker room.

The Lady Hawks struck first in the second half off a Shawnee Sweeney (Colonial Heights, Md.) basket in the paint, but the Lady Pirates countered with an 15-0 run, led by eight points from Alyssa Bennett.

Down 59-25, UMES looked to Ashleigh Claybrooks (Manassas, Va.) to get some points. She scored the next three baskets for the Lady Hawks, adding a free throw on a 7-2 run to make it 61-32.

UMES was just unable to get going on offense as the team fell 78-47.

Roach led the team in points with 14, adding three assists. Claybrooks finished with 11 points, all in the second half, while Sweeney had 10 points and seven rebounds.

The team leader for Hampton was Avant, who finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, five assists and seven steals. Teammate Nicole Hamilton got 16 points, six assists and five boards.

The Lady Hawks will rest up and get ready for Senior Day on Monday, February 25th when they take on Howard at 7:30 p.m.
