WASHINGTON – After winning Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week, freshman guard Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) put on a career-night performance as she guided the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women’s Basketball Team to a season sweep over the Howard Lady Bison, 79-57, inside Burr Gymnasium. With the victory, UMES (8-16, 6-6 MEAC) snapped a seven-year skid at the Burr.

Byrom finished with a career-high 27 points on 8-of-15 shooting and 8-of-8 from the free throw line. The North Carolina native also racked up a career-high six dimes in the win.

Freshman guard Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, N.C.) provided a spark after intermission and increased UMES’ advantage to double-digits, 47-37, with 5:32 remaining in the third. Maryland Eastern Shore kept the momentum going as they scored the next 10 points, capped off by a trey ball from sophomore guard Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.), 57-37. After three periods, the Lady Hawks were ahead, 57-41.

Byrom’s pair of freebies gave UMES their largest lead of the game, 79-54, with 54 ticks left. Nearly 12 seconds later, Howard’s Jasmine Hill connected from long range to make the final score, 79-57.

For more than 35 minutes, the Lady Hawks were in control as they dominated almost every aspect of the game. Collectively, the squad shot nearly 55-percent (29-of-53) from the floor and 82-percent (14-of-17) from the charity stripe. Other notable performances included guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) chipping in 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and senior forward Taylor Thompson (Chapel Hill, N.C.) scoring 10 points off the bench in the victory.

Defensively, UMES held the Lady Bison under 32-percent (21-of-67) from the field. Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) and Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) anchored the defensive end, combining for four rejections. Kelly posted a game-high 11 boards and six points whereas Udoji finished with nine points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.

Furthermore, the Massachusetts product became the program’s all-time shot block leader. Currently, she has 240 blocks and counting.

Te’Shya Heslip nailed two freebies and put Howard back on top in the first, 14-13, but Maryland Eastern Shore regained the advantage and closed out the period on a 10-4 run, 23-17.

Subritzky made a long ball and put the Lady Hawks ahead, 26-17, moments into the second. Both clubs went back-and-forth throughout the period, but the Lady Hawks would get the upper-hand going into intermission, 38-32.

For Howard (5-19, 3-8 MEAC), four players reached double-figures. Imani Bailey recorded a team-high 16 points, followed by Erin Blaine with 14 points. Heslip, who missed the last matchup, registered 12 points while Hill added 11 points in the loss.

This Saturday (Feb. 20), the Lady Hawks return to the William P. Hytche Athletic Center for their final home stretch of the season. Maryland Eastern Shore will host the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs for Homecoming. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., followed by the men approximately 30 minutes afterward.
