PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – In the first of their three-game home stretch, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women’s Basketball team was unable to tame the Bethune-Cookman (BCU) Wildcats as they were defeated, 61-33, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

Offensively, The Shore could not find a rhythm as they shot 23-percent (13-of-57) from the floor, including 10-percent (2-of-21) from downtown.

Senior Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) was the lone Hawk in double-figures with 10 points.

Early in the third, McCoy connected on a trey ball to trim the deficit, 30-16. At that point, the Wildcats would clamp down on the defensive end and finish the period on an 11-2 run, 41-18.

In the fourth, BCU continued to put the push on as they ballooned their lead to 30 at the 3:16 mark, 56-26. Maryland Eastern Shore never gave up, but the Wildcats would be too much, 61-33.

Other notable Hawks included center Tori Morris (Herndon, Va.) with a team-high eight boards while junior guard Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.) added six rebounds in a losing effort.

Eastern Shore opened the contest scoreless for more than five minutes until a long ball from McCoy ended the drought. Bethune-Cookman led after one, 14-7.

Nearly midway through the second, BCU increase their lead to double-digits after a layup from Kailyn Williams, 20-9. The Shore battled back and sliced the deficit down to single-digits after a layup by Ra’Jean Martin (Jacksonville, Fla.), 22-13.

BCU responded and closed out the half increasing their advantage back to double-digits, 27-13.

Bethune-Cookman (14-9, 10-1 MEAC) shot a respectable 42-percent (24-of-57) from the field. Ashanti Hunt registered a double-double, 19 points and 11 boards, in the victory.

Maryland Eastern Shore’s (9-13, 3-8 MEAC) home stretch continues Saturday (Feb. 18) when the North Carolina Central Eagles come to town for homecoming. Game-time is slated for 2 p.m. inside the Hytche Center.
