Final Stats

NORFOLK, Va. - After a week away from the hardwood, Coach Fred Batchelor and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women's Basketball team were unable to find their rhythm as they fell to Norfolk State (NSU), 74-43, inside Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall.

With the setback, Eastern Shore dropped to 9-12 (3-7 MEAC) on the season.

Offensively, the Hawks' poor shooting continued as they shot only 21-percent (14-of-67) from the floor. Sophomore Ra'Jean Martin (Jacksonville, Fla.) had a team-high 12 points in the loss.

After NSU's Gabrielle Swinson connected on a jumper and gave the Spartans a 19-point advantage early in the third, 41-22, Eastern Shore battled back and chopped the margin down to single digits after a jumper from junior Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.) at the 4:51 mark, 44-35.

Norfolk State responded and finished the third on a 9-1 spurt to take a commanding 53-36 lead after three.

NSU kept the pressure on and outscored The Shore, 21-7, in the final period.

Other notable Hawk performances included senior Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) scoring eight points off the bench. Freshmen Taelor Carter (Woodbridge, Va.) and Ksenia Popovich (Moscow, Russia) each had a team-high seven boards in a losing effort.

Norfolk State opened the contest on a 13-0 run, capped off by a jumper from Dominique Harper. After one, the Spartans held a 14-point advantage, 22-6.

In the second, NSU increased the lead as much as 23 on multiple occasions. Maryland Eastern Shore fought back and made the halftime deficit 39-22.

Norfolk State (13-10, 8-3 MEAC) shot 49-percent (30-of-61) from the field. Four Spartans reached double-figures with Kayla Roberts earning a double-double, 14 points and 10 boards, in the victory.

On Feb. 13, Maryland Eastern Shore begins a three-game home stretch with Bethune-Cookman. Game-time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

Additionally, Monday's promotions feature Greek Night and Pink Game.
