PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In their final contest of a three-game home stretch, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball team could not recover from 22 giveaways as they fell to Norfolk State, 74-63, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

With the setback, Norfolk State snapped UMES' three-game strangle on in the series.

UMES (6-16, 4-6 MEAC) outrebounded the Spartans, 42-36, and shot over 70-percent (19-of-27) from the foul line. Despite 17 second chance points, the biggest difference came in the turnover margin. Norfolk State finished +10 and forced 22 Lady Hawk miscues.

Freshman guard Ciani Byrom (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had a game-high 22 points, six boards, and four dimes. Fellow guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) also reached double-figures with 11 points in a losing effort.

Norfolk State's Koryn Lawrence drilled a three-pointer and extended their advantage to six points, 39-33, early into the third. Over the next five minutes, UMES battled back and took the lead after a pair of freebies from Subritzky, 43-41. Maryland Eastern Shore saw the lead quickly evaporate as the Spartans closed out the quarter on an 11-3 spurt and reclaimed the lead, 52-46.

In the fourth, Norfolk State's Siobhan Beslow connected on a jumper and push the margin to nine, 57-48. Maryland Eastern Shore fought back and sliced the deficit as low as four, 59-55, with more than five minutes left. Despite the multiple rallies, Norfolk State continued to make clutch baskets down the stretch and won, 74-63.

Other notable performance included freshman guard Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, N.C.) finishing with a career-high 12 boards and five points in 36 minutes of action.

After the Spartans opened the game with a 5-0 run, senior Taryana Kelly (North Brunswick, N.J.) capped off a 6-0 spurt and gave UMES their first lead of the game. Both clubs went back-and-forth throughout the first, but Maryland Eastern Shore trailed, 19-16, after one.

Sophomore forward Shauntesha Bryant (Syracuse, N.Y.) split a pair of free throws and cut the deficit down to two, 19-17, but Norfolk State answered. Gradually, the Spartans increased their advantage and held a double-digit lead with 1:04 remaining in the half. UMES responded and finished the period on a 6-0 run, capped off by senior guard Chalyse Taylor (Louisville, Ky.) nailing a trey ball, 36-31.

For the Spartans (2-19, 2-9 MEAC), Lawrence registered a team-high 21 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Kiara Phillips and Dominique Harper combined for 23 points in the victory.

This Saturday (Feb. 13), the Lady Hawks travel on route 13 where they will face Delaware State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m., followed by the men approximately 30 minutes afterward.
