PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Coach Fred Batchelor and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women’s Basketball team fell in their return home to the William P. Hytche Athletic Center versus South Carolina State (SCSU), 67-60.

With the loss, Eastern Shore (8-9, 2-4 MEAC) dropped below .500 for the first time this season.

Despite shooting nearly 41-percent (9-of-22) from downtown, the Hawks were unable to connect from the charity stripe as they shot only 25-percent (3-of-12).

Sophomore guard Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, N.C.) registered a team-high 14 points on 50-percent (7-of-14) shooting from the field. Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) added 13 points, including four trey balls, in the loss.

Trailing throughout the third, Eastern Shore reclaimed the lead after a jumper from Eaton, 42-41, but it was short-lived as SCSU’s Chantel Williams drilled a long ball, 45-43, at the 2:06 mark. After three, the Bulldogs held a four-point advantage, 50-46.

Similar to the third period, Maryland Eastern Shore was behind throughout the quarter. Senior forward Briana Mack (Harrisonburg, Pa.) made a layup and sliced the margin down to one, 58-57, with 2:08 left. South Carolina State withstood the Hawks’ late charge as they hit several key baskets down the stretch to win, 67-60.

Other notable Hawk performances included senior guard Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) scoring 11 points while Mack recorded a game-high seven boards and six points in a losing effort.

In the first three minutes, Maryland Eastern Shore opened the contest with a 9-0 run, but the Bulldogs responded and finished the period on a 20-10 spurt to take the lead after one, 20-19.

Mack put the Hawks ahead, 21-20, but SCSU answered with a quick 6-0 run, 26-21, with 5:29 remaining before the half. South Carolina State controlled the second and held a 34-31 lead going into intermission.

For SCSU (5-13, 2-5 MEAC), Bryeasha Blair had a game-high 18 points in 39 minutes of action. Jahmia Bradley netted 10 points in the victory.

On Jan. 30, Coach Batchelor’s bunch meets Savannah State inside the Hytche Center. Game-time is set for 5:30 p.m.
