McCoy's Big Shot Propels Hawks Over Wildcats
Jan. 21, 2017

Final Stats

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - With 23 ticks remaining, guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) split a pair of freebies to put the Hawks ahead, 56-54. Nearly six seconds later, Bethune-Cookman's (B-CU) Armani Walker made a layup and tied the contest, 56-56; thus, Coach Fred Batchelor called a timeout to draw up the game's potential final shot.

With time dwindling, senior guard Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) found herself open for a long trey ball and delivered a game-winner for The Shore, 59-56, with 1.7 seconds remaining. A half-court desperation three-pointer from B-CU's Kendra Cooper would come up short.

McCoy finished the afternoon with 13 points on 50-percent (3-of-6) shooting from downtown. Sophomore guard Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had a game-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor in the victory.

B-CU opened the third period on a 10-1 run and took the lead, 34-30, with 3:56 remaining in the quarter. The Shore fought back and tied the contest after a long ball from Eaton, 37-37. With a few ticks left in the third, Bethune-Cookman held a three-point advantage until a trey ball from McCoy tied the game after three, 42-42.

Other notable Hawk performances included Subritzky recording a team-high nine boards and eight points. Center Tori Morris (Herndon, Va.) came off the bench for the first time this season and delivered eight points and eight rebounds in the win.

Eastern Shore (8-7, 2-2 MEAC) opened the contest on a 14-2 run, capped off by a three-point play from McCoy. After one, the Hawks took an 18-7 lead.

Nearly midway through the second, Subritzky drilled a long ball and put the Hawks ahead, 23-9, with 6:20 remaining before intermission. Bethune-Cookman battled back and closed the quarter on a 14-5 spurt to make the halftime score 29-24 in favor of Maryland Eastern Shore.

For B-CU (9-9, 5-1 MEAC), they suffered their first conference loss of the season while seeing their eight-game winning streak in league play come to an end. Bethune-Cookman registered 26 points off the bench, led by Walker and Angel Golden. Both Wildcats combined for 24 points in the loss.

On Jan. 23, Maryland Eastern Shore faces the Florida A&M Rattlers. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
