The University of Maryland Eastern Shore dropped its fifth Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game of the season on Saturday (Jan. 20) as North Carolina A&T State built a big early lead and maintained control for the entire game in a 57-45 win.

The Hawks (4-14, 1-5 MEAC) scored just nine points in the first quarter when they shot 13 percent from the field and scored no more than 12 in any period of the contest. They shot 24 percent in the game (16-of-66).

It was disappointing, Hawks head coach Fred Batchelor said. I thought we continue to not make the plays we need to make over 40 minutes to win a basketball game at this level. Early in the game we dug a hole and then we didnt play great enough to overcome the first half.

Eastern Shore was bothered a bit by the Aggies height, but Batchelor still thought they got good looks. They also held a huge advantage on the glass pulling down 51 rebounds including 21 on the offensive end but couldnt capitalize on the extra looks.

They were a challenge for us, but we missed a bunch of layups, Batchelor said. They could have had Manute Bol out there and we were still getting layup at the basket that we have to convert. We had to miss at least 11 layups in the first half. You cant beat good teams and miss layups.

If you look at the first half a bunch of their points came on transition off us not capitalizing. A missed layup led to a three, then a missed layup and an and-1. So, we are talking about not just two-point misses, but five or six point turnarounds.

The Shore shot just 2-of-17 from behind the arc and are shooting just 19 percent (18-of-96) from deep in conference play.

We havent had any proficiency form the 3-point line in a long time I dont think all year, Batchelor said.

Jordyn Smith (Durham, North Carolina) led the Hawks with 12 points and 11 rebounds. It was her first double-double of the season and she finished 4-of-14 from the field.

Freshman forward Bairesha Gill-Miles (Lexington, Kentucky) led the Hawks pulled down 10 rebounds to go with nine points, but was 3-of-12 from the field.

The Hawks will next face North Carolina Central on Monday (Jan. 22) at 5:30 p.m.
