PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Trailing, 72-67, with under two minutes remaining, consecutive buckets from sophomore guard Ra’Jean Martin (Jacksonville, Fla.) trimmed the margin down to one. With 10 ticks left, junior guard Alexus Hicks (Raleigh, N.C.) attempted a tough three-pointer; however, Howard’s Tajzhane Dopson blocked the shot and gave the Bison a 72-71 victory inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.

With the setback, Eastern Shore dropped to .500 (7-7) on the season and 1-2 in league play.

Senior guard Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) had a team-high 13 points on 50-percent (4-of-8) shooting from the floor. Martin provided a spark off the bench, finishing with 11 points in a losing effort.

A trey ball from Hicks gave the Hawks their largest lead, 44-38, with 7:06 left in the third, but Howard responded with an 11-4 run to take the advantage, 49-48, at the 3:58 mark. With under 10 seconds left in the third, junior forward Shauntesha Bryant (Syracuse, N.Y.) put The Shore ahead after three, 60-58.

Other notable Hawk performances included sophomore guard Keyera Eaton (Winston-Salem, N.C.) scoring 10 points while guard Moengaroa Subritzky (Auckland, New Zealand) chipped in nine points in the loss.

Howard opened the contest on a 9-0 run, capped off by a trey ball from Sydni Johnson. At the 4:15 mark, the Bison held a 13-4 lead until Eastern Shore closed the quarter on an 11-2 spurt and cut the margin down to two points after one, 15-13.

In the second, Maryland Eastern Shore made several baskets, but the Bison had an answer every time. For nearly the entire period, Howard held the lead until a long ball from McCoy at the buzzer put the Hawks ahead as both squads went into intermission, 33-31.

Howard (6-8, 2-0 MEAC) shot 42-percent (27-of-64) from the field, including 42-percent (9-of-21) from long range. Five Bison reached double-figures, led by Te’Shya Heslip with 16 points.
