UMES ERASES 15-POINT DEFICIT BUT FALL VICTIM TO BUZZER BEATER AT NORFOLK STATE 61-58

NORFOLK, Va. - Despite a dominating second half where UMES came back from a 15-point deficit early and tied the score with a late 6-0 run, Rae Corbo hit a late three-point basket at the buzzer as the Lady Hawks fell to Norfolk State 61-58 at Echols Hall. UMES falls to 3-10 on the year and 1-1 in MEAC play, while the Lady Spartans go to 7-7 and 2-1 in the conference.
Norfolk State started strong with the first seven points, beginning with three points from point guard Corbo.
After a timeout by Fred Batchelor, UMES followed with an 8-2 run, including by a steal and fast break layup by Karona Roach (Bear, Del.) followed by a layup by the junior forward to pull the Lady Hawks within two 10-8.
The Lady Spartans countered with a 9-0 run over nearly five minutes, led by five straight points from Tyisha Bridges, to build their advantage to 19-8.
UMES tried to keep pace in the first half, including a pair of baskets from Shanyce Stewart (Mount Vernon, N.Y.), but another run by NSU, this one 7-0, furthered the home team's lead.
Courtney Braxton (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit her first three of the season from the corner with a minute left in the first half to pull UMES closer as the Lady Hawks went into halftime down 34-19.
The Lady Hawks came out firing from the locker room with nine straight points, combining a Sha-Kiyla Finney (Portmouth, Va.) three followed by two layups from Chelsea Sanders (Rochester, N.Y.) and a Roach long two to cut the deficit to six. UMES's defense held the Lady Spartans scoreless for the first 4:31 of the second period, getting three steals, including two by Sanders, in that time.
After the Lady Spartans ended the UMES run, Sanders hit a corner three followed by an Adobi Agbasi (Columbus, Ga.) layup to get within three 36-33.
UMES's defense kept Norfolk State without a field goal for almost the first eight minutes of the second half.
Meanwhile, Kwinnyata Mercer (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) hit a three and later a layup after a Norfolk State make to pull UMES within three again. Later, she hit another three to complete the UMES comeback and tie the score at 41-41, tying the game for the first time since the opening basket with 10:21 left in the half.
Batavia Owens hit a pair of layups in a row to give Norfolk State the lead 45-41.
A layup and one for Agbasi brought UMES back within one 45-44 before another pair of baskets for the Lady Spartans put the deficit to five.
Braxton hit a basket from the paint to bring the Maroon and Grey back to within three. After a Corbo three, Agbasi put together another layup and one followed by a Braxton free throw to get UMES within a possession 52-50 after the final media timeout. Each side traded baskets as Norfolk State got a six-point lead with 2:18 left.
UMES played strong defense and pieced together three baskets, capped by an Agbasi turnaround jumper to tie the score at 58 with under 30 seconds remaining.
Unfortunately for UMES, with 1.6 seconds left, Corbo threw up a long range three and hit it at the buzzer to give the Lady Spartans the win 61-58.
Agbasi led the Lady Hawks with 12 points off 5-8 shooting and four blocks off the bench. Mercer also came off the bench, finishing with 10 points, six rebounds and a block. Sanders earned nine points, five boards and three steals while Stewart led UMES in rebounds with eight, adding five points.
Corbo and Owens each finished with 16 points for Norfolk State, the latter off 8-11 shooting and the former with four assists. Rachel Gordon led the team with eight rebounds.
The Maroon and Grey will finish the long nine-game road trip with a rematch against Delaware State on Saturday, January 14th at 5:00 p.m.
