PRINCESS ANNE, Md.--The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletic Department received two spirit awards during the American Cancer Society Relay for Life year-end celebration Wednesday. Relay for Life is an annual event that the entire athletics department is involved with, while its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee typically stays overnight at the event.

"This is a celebration for all of your hard work throughout the year," said Jenny Palmer, Relay for Life co-chairwoman.

UMES certainly had something to celebrate as it was recognized for its accumulation of spirit points based on number of laps walked during Relay for Life and Best On-Site Team Spirit for excitement expressed at its campsite. UMES also celebrated surpassing its $1,500 goal by donating a total of $2,022 towards finding a cure.

The prize for spirit laps was a glow stick on a purple string which signifies Relay's hope to "light up the dark" feeling that accompanies those fighting cancer. Its other award was a certificate acknowledging the team's spirit shown throughout the night.

During the celebration, the Thunderin' Hawks Pep Band was acknowledged for having brought a great opening performance to the event and for setting the tone for the night. Directed by Carl Redmon, UMES Athletics was also appreciative for the bands attendance and performance.

Three SAAC Executive Board members stayed the night, including several athletics' staff members and a few student-athletes from the tennis team. Kijontray McClay, SAAC's president, Megan Buja (vice president) and Tatiana Munoz (secretary), braved the brisk evening and early morning to represent the Hawks' fight for a cure.

All of the athletic teams made an appearance and walked during the event, including the UMES Volleyball team which won its home opening match earlier in the night.

UMES Athletics is planning fundraisers for next year and will collect donations at any time during the year.
