SAAC President Talareah Frazier successfully organized the inaugural UMES Cares event

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athletics Department partnered with the Garland Hayward Youth Center Thursday afternoon for the inaugural UMES Cares Field Day for children who are toddlers through teenagers in the Hampden Avenue community.

Over 400 youth, parents and community members were in attendance in addition to over 30 student-athletes from the baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, softball, women's tennis, track and field and volleyball teams.

The event is an attempt to build strong community partnerships while providing the children with safe recreational activities.

The idea of collaborating with the youth center came from Student-Athlete Advisory Committee president Talareah Frazier (Gaithersburg, Md.) and her desire to host an event that brought the student-athletes and youth together.

"I am greatly overwhelmed by the support and turnout of the very first UMES cares," said Frazier. "I know I can speak for my fellow student-athletes when I say that we had an amazing and fun time. I really appreciate the support from the coaches and administration because without them, this never would have happened."

Frazier and SAAC have been preparing for this event for over a month and a half and were in charge of finding sponsors, organizing games, decorations and preparing food.

Frazier, SAAC, GHYC and UMES Athletics would like to recognize and thank the Cheryll Collier Mills, East Gate Masonic Lodge, Peaky's Restaurant, Princess Anne Police Department, Somerset County Department of Social Services and Swing Phi Swing for their donations and volunteering their time to make UMES Cares a success.

The GHYC provides a school-based environment where extended academic learning and character development is the norm. The program offers youth a safe place where they can learn during the peak hours that juveniles are typically victims of crime or engage in criminal activity themselves.
