McClay (above) played his finest match of the year against Loyola

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — During a five-match stretch on the road for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) tennis squads this past weekend, a trio of athletes came back to Princess Anne with their finest performances of the season.

Junior Wayne Heath (Pungoteague, Va.) paced the Hawks in their first match against Howard in Washington, D.C. His valiant effort, however, were in defeat with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Howard’s Devin Coakley. Howard ultimately took the match 9-0.

In a Saturday morning matchup versus the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., senior Wirlen Elame (Silver Spring, Md.) earned a game win in both sets before falling to Navy’s Calvin Mark, 6-1 and 6-1. In the afternoon matches versus Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg, Md., Elame earned his third game win of the day before dropping the match to Mountaineer Austin Blake, 6-0 and 6-1. In the doubles match against the Mount, Heath and sophomore Mohin Uddin (Forestville, Md.) picked up a win in a one-set match before falling, 8-1.

On Sunday in a matchup versus Loyola in Baltimore, senior Kijontray McClay (San Diego, Calif.) earned his finest performance of the year, with three game wins in a 6-2, 6-1 loss. Elame finished the day with four wins in a 6-3 and 6-1 loss, while Heath picked up a win in a 6-0, 6-1 loss. Elame and McClay also finished their doubles match with two wins, ultimately dropping the match, 8-2.

For the women, senior Reine Fowajuh (Wilmington, Del.) registered a game win against Loyola’s Tiffany Ash before falling, 6-0 and 6-1. The doubles team of freshman Selena Jones (Pocomoke City, Md.) and Alex Manalova (Sofia, Bulgaria) also picked up their first game win of the season before falling, 8-0 and 8-1.



The team will make their way back to Baltimore on Tuesday for a rescheduled match against Stevenson. Match time is set for 2:00pm.
