SAVANNAH, Ga. – Junior Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) posted a career-best score of 73 to lead the University of Maryland Eastern Shore golf team to a fifth-place finish on the final day of the Tiger Invitational at the Crosswinds Golf Club. The men jumped four places in the standings from as they finished with Sunday with a score of 315, 22 strokes better than Saturday’s effort.

Although Veverka’s tally highlighted the final round, three other Hawks improved their scores from day one.  Junior Gregory Raad (Bel Air, Md.) was the second Hawk to place under 80 with a score of 78, while junior Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.) finished at 81. Junior Christopher Toney (La Plata, Md.) rounded out the scoring for UMES with a final round of 83.

Veverka began the day with a birdie, before he pared the next three to sit at one-under through four holes. Raad and Cecil each began Sunday with solid starts as the pair sat at two-over after their fourth hole, while Toney was three-over after his fifth hole. The entire group was faced with the difficult, par-3 No. 11 at the beginning of their rounds, where three would par the hole.

UMES continued its solid play throughout the middle of the round as each bettered their performance from the day before. Veverka stood at two-over through 11 holes to lead the group, while Cecil and Toney stayed on target to finish the day below 80. Veverka aided his cause with a 45-foot downhill putt from the left side that saved par at No. 4.

All four UMES golfers stayed consistent through the tail end of their rounds. Veverka birdied No. 2 and pared three others to sit at plus-one after 15 holes. Cecil pared No. 2 through No. 4, and Toney was steady through the first holes of the front nine. Raad stayed at six-over.

Armstrong Atlantic posted the best finish at the event as the squad finished with 578 points. Bethune-Cookman was second, while Alabama State and Savannah State were third and fourth, respectively.

The tournament was the final event for the men this fall. The squad will wait to see their spring schedule as it will be released shortly before the New Year.
