HAWK TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF UMES ATHLETICS (SEPTEMBER 16TH THROUGH 22ND)

PRINCESS ANNE, MD. - This week's Hawk Talk edition features baseball's 2014 schedule release, bowling's new head coach, men's & women's cross country's athletes of the week and weekend results, golf's 2013-14 outlook, softball's and volleyball's weekend results.
Let's jump right into it:
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball team released its 2014 schedule. The Hawks are set to play 20 home games at Hawk Stadium and 16 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) games. In addition, the team has put together a strong non-conference schedule including a season opener on the road against South Florida (Feb. 14-16).
Prior to the season, the team host Salem Community College (N.J.) on Oct. 5th and then travel to Delaware Tech a week later. On Oct. 19th, the team will host their annual alumni game and then wrap-up the fall with its Maroon & Gray World Series during the last week of October.
UMES was proud to announce Kayla Bandy as the new UMES Bowling Head Coach. Bandy comes to UMES from the University of Pikeville where most recently served as the assistant coach for the Bears. Additionally, as a bowler, Bandy is a two-time Junior Team USA Member and bowled at Pikeville for four seasons (2005-08).
"I'm excited for the 2013-14 season at UMES," said Bandy. "I am excited to now be a head coach for the first time as well as help continue the great traditions already established here."
Bandy was a four-time All-American while winning numerous accolades including Rookie of the Year (2005), National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association (NCBCA) & Bowling Writers of America (BWAA) Collegiate Bowler of the Year (2007 & 2008). At the time, Bandy was just the fourth woman ever to win multiple Player of the Year awards.
Freshman Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Malaga, Spain) earned his second Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) UMES Athlete of the Week along with Rachel Halmon (Women's XC) after his performance at the Delaware State University (DSU) Invitational on September 14th. The men's cross-country team placed first at the DSU Invitational as the team took three of the first four places to claim gold. The team won the four mile event by only one point over Morgan State University (38). Rmidi led the team with a 20:55.99 mark, earning him third place.
Other notable runners include Derrick Cheruiyot (Nairobi, Kenya) and Nassar Whitehead (Sunrise, FL) finishing fourth and fifth, respectively. Cheruiyot had a 21:29.00 finish while Whitehead had a 21:30.04 mark. Senior Codjo Gbedo (New Carrolton, MD) rounded out the top-10 with 22:21.64, earning him 10th place.
This past weekend, the men finished fourth at the Cappy Anderson Invitational, hosted by UMES. Rmidi led the way by finishing sixth in the event, 27:39.13.
Freshman Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, MD) earned her first PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week along with Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Men's XC) after her performance at DSU Invitational on Sept. 14th. The women's cross-country team finished second at DSU Invitational as Halmon led the way by finishing eighth in the event. Halmon finished with a 19:58.12 mark.
Other notable runners include Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine, Jamaica), Jheniel Kelly (Edgewood, MD), and Margaret Wilmot-Francis (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) finishing 10th, 11th, and 12th, respectively. Hemley had a 20:59.87 mark while Kelly and Wilmot-Francis finished 21:00.59 and 21:03, 46, respectively.
This past weekend, the women finished fourth at the Cappy Anderson Invitational. Halmon paced the women with a seventh-place finish, 20:17.00.
The four-year old program enters its first season as a MEAC member and has several competitive tournaments on the fall schedule. The golf roster is the largest in program history featuring eleven student-athletes with nine returners and two newcomers. The team also brings three of its top golfers from a year ago led by senior captain, Michael Veverka (Brunswick, MD).
"We are going to be much better," said Head Coach Marshall Cropper. "It is all about concentration and if we can carry that into the season, we are going to be pretty good."
On Sept. 15th, the Lady Hawks swept their doubleheader against Frederick Community College (CC), 12-5 and 11-0, respectively. The team scored early in both contests and never looked back. New Jersey natives Vanessa Gomez (Belleville) and Abria Tinsley (Sewell) led the Hawks to victory.
This past weekend, the Lady Hawks rallied in both contests to sweep Delaware Technical CC-Stanton, 15-5 and 12-8, respectively. The team combined for 26 hits in both games including Trenece Nash's three-run homer in game two to clinch the win.
UMES Volleyball competed in their last regular season tournament, Blue & White Classic, hosted by the University of Buffalo. The team dropped all three matches in the tournament, falling to 1-11 overall.
In the first match, #13 Ohio State knocked off the Lady Hawks, 3-0. Senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) led the team with six digs followed by Freshman Precious Manu (Carson, CA) with five digs. The next day, the team faced undefeated Buffalo and were defeated, 3-0. Lauren Berry (Bloomington, IL) led the Hawk attack with seven kills while adding two blocks (one block assist). Petra Jerabkova (Prague, Czech Republic) added six kills along with nine assists, an ace, four digs, and block (assist). The Lady Hawks wrapped up the tournament against Valparaiso, but lost in straight sets, 3-0. Haley Robinson (Honolulu, HI) led the team with seven kills, three digs, and three block assists. Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL) added four kills along with three block assists.
On Saturday, Jerabkova was named to the Blue & White All-Tournament Team. With this honor, Jerabkova earned her third All-Tournament Team with the Hawks. Jerabkova finished the tournament with 13 kills, 32 assists, and 13 digs.
The team will host their first home match of the season against conference foe, Delaware State, on Friday, September 27th. Start time is 7:00pm.
UMES Athletic Department announced a new addition to the broadcast crew for the upcoming season. Doug Newton will join Bret Lasky and David Byrd to bring fans all of the action on the Hawks Radio Network. Newton will serve as the play-by-play announcer for UMES women's basketball, volleyball, and baseball.
Lasky enters his fifth season as the play-by-play voice for Hawks' basketball while Byrd returns for his tenth season as the UMES color analyst, giving commentary for all home and select road games.
